Cliffs and Hills

We are ideally placed for some of Shetland's most beautiful (and taxing) walks.  The Ness of Hillswick is right on our doorstep with some exceptional views and many hidden archaeological treasures.  Eshaness is only a short distance to the west and offers easy access to some of Europe's most stunning cliff tops.  We are always delighted to share our own favourite hidden gems with our visitors.

Wildlife and Birds

We are lucky to sit in the middle of some of the most prolific bird and sea mammal populations.  Orca are regularly spotted in the surrounding waters, birds are abundant on the cliffs and hills and we have a family of Otters which live just below the hotel.
We are happy to point you in the right direction or introduce you to a professional guide to help you make the most of your Shetland Holiday.

Geology

Shetland is a Geologist's paradise with a remarkable range of rocks and precious minerals spanning 3 billion years of Earth's history.
A UNESCO International Geoscience and Geopark, Shetland has something to offer to all - from the budding amateur to the seasoned professional - Shetland Volcano trail ( last active 390 million years ago) centres on the Eshaness Peninsula.
History

Shetland has been inhabited for at least 6000 years and our ancestors have all left their  dwellings, places of worship and burial and artefacts  for us to find and ponder over.  From the  Bronze Age, Picts, Vikings and  Scots it is all there to explore and be amazed at.   Mousa Broch and Jarlsof,  burial Cairns  and  Castles are all accessible.
Our place names are witness to our Viking roots as is our language with our Shetland dialect bearing a strong resemblance to Scandinavian words and phrases.
More recent history in Northmavine can be enjoyed during a visit to the Tangwick Haa Museum in Eshaness. A really enjoyable treasure trove of information and displays with very knowledgable Custodians who are always delighted to welcome visitors.
